Root canal procedure

  1.  Consultation: Your dentist will evaluate your dental health, examine the affected tooth, and determine if a root canal is necessary. They may take dental X-rays to assess the extent of the infection.
  2. Anesthesia: Before the procedure begins, the dentist will administer a local anesthetic to ensure you’re comfortable and pain-free throughout the treatment.
  3. Accessing the tooth: A small access hole will be drilled into the tooth. This provides the dentist with access to the infected or inflamed pulp inside the tooth.
  4. Removing pulp: Using specialized tools, the dentist will carefully remove the infected or damaged pulp from the tooth’s root canals. The canals will then be shaped and cleaned to eliminate any remaining debris.
  5. Disinfection and filling: The cleaned root canals are then disinfected to remove bacteria. Afterward, the canals are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha, which seals the canals to prevent reinfection.
  6. Restoration: In most cases, a dental crown or filling is placed on top of the treated tooth to restore its strength, shape, and functionality. This step may be performed during the same visit or in a subsequent appointment.
  7. Recovery and aftercare: After the root canal procedure, it’s normal to experience some temporary sensitivity. Your dentist may prescribe pain medication or recommend over-the-counter pain relievers.
It’s important to follow good oral hygiene practices, including brushing, flossing, and regular dental check-ups, to maintain the health of the treated tooth and surrounding teeth.
